Working at 50 Plus

Live long and Prosper

Live long

Good health care, improved diet and a better quality of life have paid dividends for all of us.  Our life expectancy continues to increase rapidly. In 1945 the average life expectancy for men was 63 now it's 77. On average women lived to the age of 68 in 1945 whereas now they live to 81. Today, the over-50s make up less than a third of the population. By 2021, that proportion will have risen to 40%. Since 1997, the number of workers aged between 50 and 69 has increased by 1.6 million - an increase of about 27%.

When the Old Age Pension was introduced in 1908, it guaranteed an income for everyone over 70. But then there were ten workers for every pensioner. At present there are four workers for every pensioner and economists predict that by 2050, there will be two workers for every one in retired person.

And Prosper

Many people simply can’t wait to retire early; this book probably isn’t for them.  This book has been written specifically for people over the age of fifty to help them to get into employment and stay in employment for as long as they choose to work, and earn an income.

The working environment and opportunities have never been better for older workers.  The United Kingdom is facing a skills shortage.  The pool of twenty and thirty somethings continues to dimininish in size whilst the pool of fifty somethings and above gets ever bigger.  This pool represents a huge supply of experienced, mature and skilled workers. Many employers have recognised this and many are now seeking to build an age diverse workforce, through an ‘Age Positive’ philosophy.

Add to this new mind set, the fact that the law has strengthened in favour of older workers. In October 2006, the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations (2006) came into force.  Since then, if you’re 55 and apply for a job, and you get turned down because of your age, they will be breaking the law.

Barriers holding back older jobseekers

Whilst the environment is changing for the better for older workers some candidates seem to miss out on opportunities from.

·        Having low self esteem.  Writing yourself off.  Undervaluing your skills and experience.

·        An aversion / avoidance of Information Technology.  In today’s workplace there is a need for up to date computer skills - email etc.  Many employers that I've spoken to say they simply do not accept applications by traditional mail any longer, and many jobs need the use of basic computer skills.

·        There is a strong feeling from employers that applications from people aged 50+ are no different from applications from any other candidates, so over 50’s need  use all of the skills used by any other applicant.  They need to produce a well prepared application, which matches the candidate to the job and they need to convince the interviewer during the selection process.

The future

As the over-50s become an ever more significant proportion of the population, society will increasingly depend on the contribution they can make. Getting older as a nation is something which we should celebrate. For some, it means more years for relaxation and retirement. For others, it means a longer and more fulfilling career, and a more prosperous retirement.  I hope that this book will help those of you who choose it, to have that longer and more fulfilling career and prosperous retirement.

I hope the tips and advice fom my books and website will help you to overcome the barriers and succeed in your search.

Good luck.

Top Recruitment Websites

These are my top 5 recruitment websites; based on user-friendliness, useful information and number of jobs. This is an independent view.  I have no commercial interest in any of these sites

I would strongly recommend that you post your CV onto all of these websites, so that recruiters can find you when they search for candidates..

I would also recommend that you modify your CV very, very slightly and re-upload it each week so that it will come high in the rankings recruiters do searches.
